How much does it cost to install an EV charger?
A straightforward Level 2 charger on an attached garage wall, close to a panel with spare capacity, generally runs $850 to $2,200 installed. Long conduit runs, a service upgrade and trenching to a detached structure are what move a job past $3,000. Commercial and fleet work is priced per port and starts around $3,500. The federal charger credit ended June 30, 2026, so the only money left on the table is state and utility.
Ranges are modelled from installed-cost data and are not quotes. Federal credit status verified 2026-08-13.
| Scope | Typical installed range | Priced per | What pushes it to the top |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home, Level 2, attached garage | $850 – $2,200 | Job | Long run, panel upgrade, weatherproof outdoor mounting |
| Home, Level 2, detached structure | $2,000 – $6,000 | Job | Trenching, buried conduit, a sub-feed to the outbuilding |
| Business, Level 2, networked | $4,500 – $9,500 | Port | Access control, ADA routes, sub-panel and make-ready |
| Fleet depot, Level 2 | $3,500 – $9,000 | Port | Load management, switchgear, phased build |
| Parking or multifamily, Level 2 | $5,000 – $11,000 | Port | Pedestal footings, lot trenching, resident metering |
| Commercial DC fast | $50,000 – $160,000 | Port | Service upgrade, transformer, utility make-ready timeline |
The five things that actually move the number
- 01
Distance from the panel to the charger
The single largest swing on a normal residential job. Under twenty feet is close to free; sixty to a hundred feet of conduit, conductors and terminations is a real line item.
- 02
Whether your service has room
A 200-amp panel with open spaces usually takes a 40 to 60-amp EV circuit as-is. An older 100-amp service, or a panel with no spare slots, means a load-management device or a service upgrade.
- 03
Where the car parks
An attached garage is the cheap case. A detached garage, a carport or a pad across the yard means weatherproof equipment and often a trench.
- 04
The local labour and permit environment
Coastal and Northeast metros run materially above the national baseline for the same scope, and permit fees differ by an order of magnitude between neighbouring jurisdictions.
- 05
What your utility still pays
This is the only line that can move in your favour, and it is entirely local. Some utilities pay several hundred dollars. Some offer a monthly subscription instead of a rebate. Many offer nothing at all.
There is no federal tax credit for an EV charger installed today — for a home or for a business. Public Law 119-21 moved the termination of the Section 30C Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit to June 30, 2026, and both halves of it ended on that date: the 30% residential credit capped at $1,000 per port, and the business credit of 6% (30% with prevailing wage and apprenticeship) capped at $100,000 per item. The separate Section 30D and 25E clean-vehicle credits ended for deliveries after September 30, 2025.
Most pages you will find on this subject still say you can claim thirty percent back, up to $1,000. That has not been true since June 30, 2026. It was also never universal: while the credit was live, a home had to sit in an eligible census tract — low-income or non-urban — so a great many suburban installs never qualified even then. If a quote you receive nets a federal credit against the price, the quote is wrong, and the difference comes out of your pocket.
What are we charging?
This picks the pricing model. A garage wall and a twelve-port depot have nothing in common but the wizard.
