EV charger rebates and incentives, by who actually pays them

There is no federal tax credit for a charger installed today — Section 30C terminated June 30, 2026. What is left is a state layer, a utility layer and, in a few places, a local or carmaker program. The utility layer is the one that varies by address, and it is the one this database exists for.

The four layers, and which one is worth your time

federal

Federal

Empty for residential charger installs placed in service after June 30, 2026. Treat any proposal that assumes it as an error.

state

State

Legislated, so it changes on a session calendar and runs out on a budget. Medium volatility, resolvable from your state alone.

utility

Utility

The high-value, high-volatility layer. Resolves from your address, not your ZIP, and is why two neighbours can get different answers.

local

Local and carmaker

Thin coverage, occasionally significant. City or county programs and manufacturer credits tied to a specific vehicle.

The federal charger credit has ended

There is no federal tax credit for an EV charger installed today — for a home or for a business. Public Law 119-21 moved the termination of the Section 30C Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit to June 30, 2026, and both halves of it ended on that date: the 30% residential credit capped at $1,000 per port, and the business credit of 6% (30% with prevailing wage and apprenticeship) capped at $100,000 per item. The separate Section 30D and 25E clean-vehicle credits ended for deliveries after September 30, 2025.

Most pages you will find on this subject still say you can claim thirty percent back, up to $1,000. That has not been true since June 30, 2026. It was also never universal: while the credit was live, a home had to sit in an eligible census tract — low-income or non-urban — so a great many suburban installs never qualified even then. If a quote you receive nets a federal credit against the price, the quote is wrong, and the difference comes out of your pocket.
