Do EV chargers need ventilation?
Almost always no, and the reason is specific rather than reassuring. Article 625 of the NEC splits the question in two: equipment listed for use where ventilation is not required needs none, and mechanical ventilation is required only where the vehicle itself requires ventilation during charging. That describes vented lead-acid batteries, which offgas hydrogen. It does not describe the sealed lithium-ion packs in modern electric cars. What is genuinely separate — and what produces most of the wrong answers on this question — is the fire code, which can impose provisions on enclosed and underground parking that have nothing to do with Article 625 and are not ventilation requirements in the code sense.

What the code actually says
NEC 625.52 has two halves and the answer is decided by which half you fall into. Ventilation is not required where the equipment is listed or labelled for use in locations where ventilation is not required. Mechanical ventilation is required where the vehicle requires ventilation during charging, and in that case the code sets how the ventilation is sized and how it is tied to the charging equipment.
The rule exists because of a battery chemistry you probably do not have
Vented lead-acid batteries release hydrogen while charging, and hydrogen is flammable in air at low concentrations. That is the hazard mechanical ventilation was written to manage, and it belongs to forklifts, industrial trucks, floor scrubbers and older stationary battery rooms rather than to passenger EVs.

The fire code is a different conversation, and it is a real one
An AHJ can and does impose fire-protection conditions on charging in enclosed and underground parking. Those conditions are legitimate, they are enforceable, and they are not ventilation requirements under Article 625.
What is worth doing in an enclosed garage anyway
None of the following is required by Article 625, and all of it is sensible in a structure.
Do EV chargers in a garage need ventilation?
In virtually every real case, no. The NEC requires mechanical ventilation only where the vehicle requires ventilation during charging, and equipment listed for use in locations where ventilation is not required carries the answer on its label. Modern EVs with sealed lithium-ion packs do not offgas during normal charging.
Why does NEC 625.52 mention ventilation at all if it is rarely required?
Because Article 625 covers charging generally, including vehicles with vented lead-acid batteries that release hydrogen while charging. The rule exists for those. It has stayed in the code as the equipment that triggers it has become rare in passenger vehicle charging.
Does an underground garage need extra ventilation for EV charging?
Not under the electrical code. Enclosed and underground parking can attract fire-code conditions from the AHJ, and those are worth asking about early, but they are fire-protection provisions rather than a ventilation requirement triggered by charging. Ask the fire official for this address at design stage rather than assuming either way.
What about lithium-ion battery fires — does ventilation help?
That is a fire-protection question and not a charging-ventilation one. A pack in thermal runaway is a serious event that the fire code addresses through detection, suppression and access provisions. Garage exhaust designed to clear vehicle emissions is not the mitigation for it, and treating ventilation as a fire strategy is how this topic gets muddled.
We charge forklifts and EVs in the same building. Same rule?
No. Industrial equipment with vented lead-acid batteries carries a genuine ventilation requirement for its charging area, including OSHA obligations. The passenger EV chargers in the same building generally do not. Design them as two separate problems and do not let the industrial answer be applied to the car park by default.
The expensive questions are elsewhere
Ventilation almost never changes a garage charging budget. Capacity, mounting and the run from the service almost always do. Put those into the estimate and you will see where your money is actually going.
