Is there still a federal EV charger tax credit?

No. The Section 30C Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit terminated on June 30, 2026. Public Law 119-21 moved its sunset forward from December 31, 2032, and property placed in service after June 30, 2026 does not qualify. There is no federal replacement. The separate clean-vehicle credits under Sections 30D and 25E ended for deliveries after September 30, 2025.

What changed, precisely

Section 30C offered thirty percent of the cost of qualified refueling property, capped at $1,000 for an individual, with a larger per-item cap on the business side. Its statutory termination date was December 31, 2032. Public Law 119-21 moved that date to June 30, 2026. The credit did not shrink and it was not means-tested; it stopped.

What placed in service means for you

The test is when the property is placed in service, not when you signed a contract or paid a deposit. A charger energised and available for use on or before June 30, 2026 may qualify on a return for that year. A charger commissioned in July does not, regardless of when the work was ordered.

Why so many pages still say otherwise

Most content on this subject was written between 2023 and 2025, when the credit ran to 2032 and there was no reason to expect otherwise. Very little of it has been revisited. If you search this question today you will find confident, well-formatted, entirely obsolete answers — including on pages that rank well. Check the date on anything you read about this, including this page.

What is actually left

State programs and utility programs, both of which vary enormously and neither of which is national. In some places the total available now exceeds what the federal credit paid; in many places there is nothing at all. That is the honest picture, and it is the reason a rebate answer is only useful when it is attached to a named utility and a date.

Can I still claim the credit for a charger installed in early 2026?

If the property was placed in service on or before June 30, 2026, it falls inside the termination date. Placed in service means energised and available for use, not ordered or paid for. This is a question for your tax preparer, who will want the commissioning date and the invoice.

Did the credit get replaced by anything federal?

No. There is no successor federal credit for charging equipment. What remains is the state layer and the utility layer, both of which are local and neither of which is guaranteed to exist where you live.
