Which connector standard should a fleet depot use?

Standardise on the connector your next ten years of vehicle orders will carry, not on the one your current fleet has. For a North American depot charging light-duty vehicles on AC, that means the answer follows your OEM's roadmap: J1772 has been the AC connector for two decades and remains everywhere, while NACS — standardised by SAE as J3400 — is what most automakers announced they are moving their North American vehicles to. Handle the mismatch with adapters or dual-cable units, and price the mismatch honestly, because a mixed-connector yard has an operational cost that spec sheets never show.

Which connector standard should a fleet depot use?

A depot is not a public charging site, and that changes the answer

Public charging has to serve every vehicle that pulls in, which is why the public-charging answer is 'support everything'. A depot serves a vehicle list you control, on a purchasing schedule you control, driven by employees you train. That is a fundamentally easier problem and it permits a fundamentally cheaper answer: one connector, one cable type, one spare-parts stock, one thing for a driver to do at eleven at night in the rain. If you read connector advice written for retail or workplace charging and apply it to a yard, you will over-buy flexibility you do not need and under-buy the ergonomics you do.

The connectors you will actually be offered

Four names come up in North America and only two of them are live decisions for a light-duty depot on AC charging.

Decide from the order book, not the parking lot

Charging equipment installed this year will still be on the wall when the vehicles that are in the yard today have been cycled out twice. So the useful input is not what you own; it is what your OEM will ship you in model years three through eight, and that is a question your fleet account manager can answer in writing. Ask it in writing. If the answer is that the chassis you buy is moving to J3400, install J3400 cables and adapt the legacy vehicles. If the answer is that your chassis stays on J1772 — which is common in the medium-duty and vocational world — install J1772 and stop worrying about it. The wrong move is choosing a connector from consumer news coverage rather than from a purchase commitment.

The cable is the procurement risk, not the plug

Ten years of a depot connector decision is a cable-and-mounting decision. A charging cable in a yard gets driven over, dragged through gravel, frozen, dropped, yanked at an angle and handled with gloves on. The connector standard determines almost none of how well that goes; the cable gauge, the strain relief, the retraction or management system, the holster height and the mounting geometry determine all of it. Specify cable length against your actual parking geometry, because a cable one position too short generates daily improvisation and a cable four feet too long spends its life on the ground. Ask what a replacement cable assembly costs, whether it is field-replaceable, and what the lead time is — that is the part you will be buying repeatedly, and a unit whose cable is not field-replaceable turns a scuffed cable into a dead port.

Amperage: pick from the dwell window, then from the connector

Connector choice does not set charging speed; circuit amperage does, and on a depot the amperage should come out of the pilot arithmetic rather than out of a brochure. Note the code arithmetic in the third column: EV charging is a continuous load, so the branch circuit is sized above the charger's continuous current, which is why a 48-amp unit needs a 60-amp circuit. That ratio is what makes higher-amperage ports expensive at scale.

What a mixed-connector yard actually costs

Nobody puts this in a business case because none of it is a line item, and all of it is real. Adapters get lost, and a lost adapter at 6am is a vehicle that did not charge. Adapters get left plugged into the cable and driven over. Drivers use the wrong port and report a fault that is not a fault. Dual-cable units cost more per port and have twice the cable assemblies to replace. Signage and driver training expand. Your spares inventory doubles. And the yard supervisor spends a portion of every week on a problem that would not exist with one cable type. None of this argues against a mixed yard when the fleet is genuinely mixed. It argues for converging deliberately on one connector as the fleet turns over, and for treating the transition period as a cost with an end date rather than a permanent state.

Medium and heavy duty diverge from the light-duty answer

Do not extend a light-duty connector decision to a Class 6 to 8 yard without checking. Heavier chassis in North America have largely used CCS1 for DC charging, and the industry has been developing a dedicated high-power connector for megawatt-class charging of heavy vehicles, which is a different physical interface again. If your electrification plan includes heavy trucks in the same yard later, the practical hedge is not to buy their connector today — it is to leave physical and electrical room for a separate high-power area, with conduit and distribution capacity reserved and pavement not yet committed. Connector standards for heavy vehicles are still moving; trench routes and transformer pads are not.

Two clauses that turn a connector decision into a reversible one

First, require field-replaceable cable assemblies and get a price and lead time for a replacement assembly of each type at the time of purchase. Second, ask whether the unit supports a cable assembly change to a different connector standard later, and if so what that costs and whether it affects the listing or the warranty. Some equipment is built so that the connector is a serviceable part and some is not, and the difference does not appear on a datasheet — you have to ask. A charger whose connector can be changed in the field is a ten-year asset with an option attached. One whose connector cannot be changed is a bet on a standard, and bets should be priced as bets.

Should a depot install NACS or J1772 chargers today?

Whichever your next several model years of vehicle orders will carry, confirmed in writing by your fleet account manager. J1772 remains the established North American AC connector and is not going away from installed equipment; J3400 is where most automakers said their North American light-duty vehicles are heading. Your order book decides, not the news cycle.

Are adapters an acceptable long-term answer in a yard?

As a transition, yes. As a permanent design, no. Adapters are a daily handling item that gets lost, damaged and left in cables, and every loss is a vehicle that did not charge overnight. Use any adapter that is listed to a recognised safety standard and supported by the vehicle OEM, and set an end date for the arrangement.

Does the connector affect charging speed?

Not on its own. AC charging speed is set by the circuit amperage, the charger rating and the vehicle's onboard charger, and the vehicle's limit is frequently the binding one. A 48-amp port cannot push more into a vehicle whose onboard charger accepts less, which is why depot amperage should come from measured nightly energy rather than from a datasheet.

What about DC fast charging connectors at a depot?

CCS1 is the DC connector on most non-Tesla vehicles sold in North America, and J3400 carries DC on the same pins for vehicles that use it. If DC fast is in the plan, confirm the connector against the specific chassis and model years you will buy, and expect the medium and heavy-duty answer to differ from the light-duty one.

Can chargers be converted to a different connector later?

Some can and some cannot, and it is not usually on the datasheet. Ask the manufacturer whether the cable assembly is field-replaceable, whether a different connector assembly is offered for the same unit, and what a change does to the product listing and the warranty. Get the answer before purchase; it is the cheapest option you will ever buy.


The connector is not what moves the price
