Can you take your EV charger with you when you move?
Yes, and how painful it is depends entirely on how it was connected. A plug-in unit unplugs and lifts off its bracket in about a minute, and you take it the way you take a microwave. A hardwired unit is an electrician visit at the old house to disconnect it and make the wall safe, and another at the new one to put it back up. The circuit itself never moves — it belongs to the house — and what you leave behind is a live 240-volt feed that has to be terminated properly rather than taped off.

What you own and what the house owns
Two separate things got installed. The charger is a piece of equipment. The circuit — breaker, conductors, conduit and box — is part of the building's electrical system, and it stays. Nobody pulls wire out of a finished wall to take it to the next address.That split is most of the answer. The charger is worth a few hundred dollars and is portable. The circuit is worth most of what you paid and is not. Which is also why an EV circuit already run to the garage is a genuine feature to leave for a buyer, whether or not the charger goes with it.
Plug-in versus hardwired, task by task
The plug-in case is uneventful. Unplug, undo two screws on the wall bracket, coil the cable, take it. The receptacle stays, the circuit stays, the wall has a bracket-sized pair of holes in it and nothing else.The hardwired case is a job at both ends. Someone has to kill the breaker, open the unit, disconnect the conductors, remove the unit, and then leave the conductors terminated in a box with a cover on it. That last part is not optional and it is not something to leave for the new owner to notice.
What to leave for the buyer, and why a receptacle beats a blank plate
If you are taking a hardwired unit, spend the extra thirty minutes of the electrician's time to fit a receptacle rather than a blank cover. A 240-volt receptacle on a dedicated circuit is a thing a buyer's agent can point at. A blank plate is a thing a home inspector writes up as an abandoned circuit and a buyer asks awkward questions about.Check the code edition your jurisdiction has adopted before you assume this is trivial. Under the 2020 and later National Electrical Code, a receptacle installed for the connection of EV charging requires ground-fault protection for personnel, which in practice usually means a GFCI breaker rather than a standard one. Which edition applies is a jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction fact, and it is the sort of detail that turns a small favour into a real line item if nobody asks first.Label the breaker while the panel is open. An unlabelled 60-amp breaker in a panel is a small mystery that costs the next electrician time and the next owner confidence.
The contract question, which is not an electrical question
In most US residential purchase contracts, anything permanently attached to the property is a fixture and conveys with the house unless it is specifically excluded in writing. A hardwired charger bolted to the wall and wired into the building is about as attached as equipment gets. A plug-in unit hanging on a bracket is far more arguably personal property.That distinction is not worth arguing over at closing. Name the charger explicitly in the contract, either as included or as excluded, and the ambiguity disappears. Sellers lose this argument more often than they expect, and losing it late costs more than the charger.This varies by state and by the standard forms your market uses. If there is money in it, ask your agent rather than the internet.
What it costs to take it with you
The removal is short work. The re-installation is a normal Level 2 job at the new address, and it is priced like one, because the new house has its own panel, its own run length and its own permit office. Owning the hardware already saves you the hardware, which is the smallest line on the bill.Removal pricing is a local matter and generally lands at whatever the electrician's minimum visit costs, so we are not going to publish a national figure for it. The bits people forget
A connected charger is usually tied to an account. Deregister it before you hand it over, or transfer it to the buyer deliberately. A unit still sitting in your app at an address you no longer own is a small privacy problem and an annoyance for whoever inherits it.Take the mounting hardware, the cable holster and the manual. The bracket is unit-specific and buying a replacement is more irritating than it should be.Check the new address before you plan around reusing the unit. If the new house parks the car outdoors and your unit is listed for indoor use only, or if the new jurisdiction is on a code cycle that changes the requirements for your mounting location, the charger you own may not be the charger that goes on that wall.And check the new panel. A unit that ran at 48 amps at the old house may have to be dialled back at the new one, which most units allow at commissioning. That is a setting, not a purchase.
The reason this belongs in the buying decision
Hardwired is generally the better electrical choice: it supports higher continuous current, it is cleaner outdoors, and there is no receptacle to wear out under nightly load. Those are real advantages and they are why plenty of installs are hardwired.Portability is a real advantage on the other side, and it has nothing to do with electricity. If you expect to move within a few years, if you rent, or if you want to be able to swap the unit under warranty without booking an electrician, plug-in earns its place on those grounds alone.One caveat worth stating plainly: a plug-in unit is limited to 40 amps of continuous draw on a NEMA 14-50, and cheap receptacles are a known failure point under nightly EV load. If you go plug-in, pay for an industrial-grade receptacle. It is a small decision that prevents a scorched outlet.

The specific hazard here is what gets left behind: live conductors that must be terminated inside a box with a cover, not capped and pushed back into a wall. Pay someone to do it properly and get the breaker labelled while they are there.
Should I leave the circuit for the buyer or have it removed?
Leave it. A dedicated 240-volt circuit at the parking spot is worth more as a feature than the copper is worth as scrap, and removing it means opening the wall. Fitting a receptacle so the buyer can plug in their own unit turns it from an oddity into a selling point.
Will my charger work at the new house?
Electrically, almost certainly, though it may need dialling down to a lower current if the new panel has less room — most units allow that at commissioning. The two things to check are whether the unit is listed for the mounting location you have in mind, and whether the new jurisdiction's adopted code cycle changes anything about that location.
Is any of the reinstallation cost recoverable through a tax credit?
Not federally. Section 30C does not apply to property placed in service after June 30, 2026, and there is no federal replacement. Whether your new utility offers a residential rebate is a separate question and is worth checking before the work is done, because many programs require pre-approval.
Moving? Price the new address before you box up the old charger
The hardware you already own is the cheapest part. What decides the bill at the new house is the panel and the distance to where the car parks. Two minutes of questions gets you a range for that work.
