Tesla home charger types: Mobile Connector, Wall Connector and Universal Wall Connector

Tesla sells three different things people lump together as "the charger." The Mobile Connector is a portable travel cord that plugs into an outlet and comes with a 120-volt adapter as standard; it can reach Level 2 power output only if you buy and install a 240-volt adapter and outlet for it, and Tesla itself positions it as a backup, not a daily home charging solution — Tesla listed it at $300 on its shop page as of 2026-08-20. The Wall Connector is a hardwired, permanently mounted unit built for daily use, with a fixed NACS cable, up to 48 amps and 11.5 kW, listed at $535 as of 2026-08-20. The Universal Wall Connector is the same hardwired hardware with one addition: a J1772 adapter built into the unit, so it charges NACS and J1772 vehicles from one box, listed at $600 as of 2026-08-20. There is no separate Tesla unit with a fixed J1772 cable in place of NACS — a household with no NACS vehicle still uses the Universal Wall Connector and its built-in adapter, not a dedicated J1772-only charger. None of the three has anything to do with Supercharging, which is public DC fast-charging infrastructure and not a home-hardware decision at all.

Tesla home charger types: Mobile Connector, Wall Connector and Universal Wall Connector

Three products, three jobs

Tesla's naming does not make the split obvious, so start with what each one is for rather than what it is called. The Mobile Connector is the cord Tesla used to box with every new car. It is meant to live in your frunk and get you home on a road trip, not to be your everyday charging setup.The other two are a different category of product: permanently mounted, hardwired units installed by an electrician, built for a car that parks in the same spot every night for years. Electrically they are the same unit — the only difference between them is what plugs into the vehicle. A Wall Connector has a fixed NACS cable. A Universal Wall Connector has that same NACS cable plus a J1772 adapter built into the unit, so it also charges a non-NACS car. Mobile Connector: what it is, and why it is not your Level 2 install

The Mobile Connector is a 20-foot cable with a NACS plug on the car end and an interchangeable adapter on the outlet end. As sold today it comes standard with a NEMA 5-15 adapter — an ordinary 120-volt household plug — which draws 12 amps continuously for about 1.4 kW, independently reported by Electric Vehicle Geek's Mobile Connector review. That is Level 1 charging, the same tier as the cord that ships with most other EVs.Tesla also sells 240-volt adapters for the Mobile Connector — NEMA 6-20, NEMA 14-30 and NEMA 6-50 — and the 6-50 adapter is the one that reaches Level 2 territory: 32 amps, 7.7 kW, the ceiling the Mobile Connector can ever deliver regardless of adapter. Independent coverage (teslord.com's Mobile Connector comparison, and Electric Vehicle Geek's review using the equivalent NEMA 14-50 adapter) confirms the same 32-amp cap holds no matter which 240V adapter or breaker size is behind it — the NEMA 6-20 draws 16 amps on its 20A circuit, and the NEMA 14-30 draws 24 amps on its 30A circuit. That is real Level 2 power. What it is not is a Level 2 installation, because getting there requires three things Tesla does not include: the 240-volt adapter itself, a matching outlet installed by an electrician, and a dedicated circuit feeding that outlet exactly like the circuit a Wall Connector would need.Tesla also stopped including the Mobile Connector with new vehicles for orders placed after April 17, 2022; Tesla listed it at $300 on its shop page as of 2026-08-20, sold separately, and adapters beyond the standard 120V one are an additional cost. And the connector itself is a lighter-duty, portable product — built to be plugged and unplugged for travel, not left in place as the single connection point for years of daily overnight charging the way a hardwired unit is. Tesla's own guidance directs daily home charging toward the Wall Connector, with the Mobile Connector positioned for travel and as a backup.

Wall Connector: the hardwired daily-use charger

The Wall Connector is what most people picture when they say "Tesla charger." It mounts to a wall, is hardwired into a dedicated circuit by an electrician rather than plugged into an outlet, and ends in a 24-foot NACS cable. As shipped, that NACS cable is the only connector on this model — Tesla does not sell a version of this unit with a J1772 cable in place of NACS. A household that needs J1772 support steps up to the Universal Wall Connector instead (covered next), which keeps the NACS cable and adds a J1772 adapter.Its output is adjustable at commissioning, from 16 amps up to a maximum of 48 amps and 11.5 kW — a figure independently reported for the same hardwired platform by 9to5toys' coverage of the current lineup ('up to 11.5 kW / 48 amp output') — and the electrician sets it to match the breaker the circuit was built for. Current-generation units support power sharing: up to six Wall Connectors on one circuit can split the available power between whichever cars are actually charging, also confirmed independently by 9to5toys ('allows up to six Wall Connectors to be linked'), which is the usual answer for a household adding a second EV or a second charger without pulling a second circuit.Because it is hardwired, a Wall Connector has no plug to wear out and no adapter to lose, and it carries a listing for outdoor mounting that a household 120V receptacle used daily for years does not have. The trade is that removing or relocating it takes an electrician, not a person unplugging a cord. Tesla listed the Wall Connector at $535 on its shop page as of 2026-08-20 — confirm the current price before you order, since Tesla's hardware pricing moves.

Universal Wall Connector: the same box, plus a built-in J1772 adapter

The Universal Wall Connector shares the Wall Connector's electrical specifications — hardwired, adjustable up to 48 amps and 11.5 kW, 24-foot NACS cable, power sharing across a group of up to six units (independently confirmed by 9to5toys, as above). The difference is entirely at the connector: a J1772 adapter is built into the unit — reviewers describe it as an integrated adapter rather than a separately purchased accessory (EnergySage's review calls it an 'integrated Magic Dock that handles both connector types') — so the same wall-mounted box serves a NACS car with the NACS cable and a J1772 car with the built-in adapter. Tesla's own product pages describe that adapter as docking into the side of the unit and releasing with a button on the handle; that specific mechanical detail is manufacturer-stated and was not independently verified beyond the fact, confirmed above, that the adapter ships integrated into the unit rather than sold separately.This is the unit to consider for two situations. First, a household with one Tesla and one non-Tesla vehicle that wants one charger instead of two. Second, anyone future-proofing an install against a next vehicle purchase they have not made yet, since the connector on the car you buy in five years no longer decides whether this unit will work for it.It is not the unit to buy purely because it sounds more capable. If every vehicle in the household has and will keep a NACS port, the plain Wall Connector does the identical electrical job for less hardware and a lower price. Tesla listed the Universal Wall Connector at $600 on its shop page as of 2026-08-20 — $65 more than the plain Wall Connector's $535 the same day — and that premium buys the built-in J1772 adapter and nothing else electrically.

What each one needs from your panel and your electrician

For a Mobile Connector used at 240 volts, the electrician's job is the outlet: a correctly rated receptacle — commonly a NEMA 6-50 or 14-50 — on its own dedicated circuit, sized and breakered the same way a hardwired charger's circuit would be. There is no configuration step for the Mobile Connector itself; its output is capped automatically by which adapter is plugged into it, not set by the installer.For a Wall Connector or Universal Wall Connector, the electrician runs a dedicated branch circuit from the panel to the mounting location and sets the unit's maximum current at commissioning — commonly by DIP switch or the Tesla app — to match the breaker. NEC 625.42 is what allows the circuit to be sized against that adjustable setting rather than a fixed nameplate maximum. Bring the model number, not just the product name, because the breaker size, the conductor size and whether power sharing applies all come from that unit's datasheet, and Tesla's lineup and part numbers change over time.One planning question applies to all three: how far the mounting or outlet location is from the panel. That distance, not the hardware choice, is usually what decides the bulk of an installed price.

Supercharging has nothing to do with this decision

None of the three products on this page connect to or interact with Supercharging. The Mobile Connector, Wall Connector and Universal Wall Connector are all AC Level 1 or Level 2 hardware for overnight charging at home. Supercharging is DC fast charging delivered by industrial-scale public infrastructure that a residential electrical service does not have and is not built to add.The only place the two overlap conceptually is that a well-sized home Level 2 setup is what keeps most owners off the Supercharger network for routine driving, saving it for road trips where it belongs. That is a usage pattern, not a hardware relationship — choosing between the two hardwired models, or setting one at 40 amps instead of 48, changes nothing about how a car Superchargers on the road.

Is the Tesla Mobile Connector a Level 2 charger?

Only if you buy a 240-volt adapter for it and have an electrician install a matching outlet and dedicated circuit. As it ships today, with the standard 120-volt adapter, it charges at Level 1 speed — about 1.4 kW. Its maximum possible output, using the NEMA 6-50 adapter, is 32 amps and 7.7 kW, which is real Level 2 power, but getting there is effectively the same electrical job as installing a Wall Connector.

What is the difference between a Tesla Wall Connector and a Universal Wall Connector?

The electrical hardware is identical — hardwired, adjustable up to 48 amps and 11.5 kW, power sharing with up to five other units. The Universal Wall Connector adds a J1772 adapter built into the unit, so it charges both NACS and J1772 vehicles from one mount. The plain Wall Connector has a fixed NACS cable and nothing else.

Does Tesla make a charger with just a J1772 cable, no NACS?

No. Tesla's lineup does not include a standalone hardwired charger with only a J1772 cable. The way to charge a J1772 vehicle from Tesla hardware is the Universal Wall Connector, which keeps the fixed NACS cable and adds a J1772 adapter built into the unit — Tesla listed it at $600 on its shop page as of 2026-08-20.

Does a Tesla Wall Connector need its own dedicated circuit?

Yes. It is hardwired equipment, and the branch circuit feeding it is sized specifically for it under NEC Article 625, at 125 percent of whatever continuous current the electrician sets the unit to. It does not share a circuit with anything else in the house. This applies equally to the Wall Connector and Universal Wall Connector.

Does Tesla still include the Mobile Connector with a new car?

No. Tesla stopped including it with new vehicle orders placed after April 17, 2022. It is now sold separately, and 240-volt adapters beyond the standard 120-volt one are an additional purchase.

Can I use a Tesla Wall Connector with a non-Tesla car?

Do I need the 48-amp setting, or is a lower one fine?

Most households do not need 48 amps. A 32 or 40-amp setting on a Wall Connector or the Mobile Connector's 6-50 adapter refills a normal day's driving in a few hours, well inside a typical overnight window. Is there a tax credit for buying Tesla home charging hardware?

No federal one. Section 30C terminated for property placed in service after June 30, 2026, under 26 U.S.C. §30C(i) as amended by section 70504 of Public Law 119-21. It applies to none of the three products on this page. State and utility rebates still exist in places and are worth checking by name.

Can a Wall Connector charge two Teslas at once?

One Wall Connector charges one car at a time through its single cable. Two cars from one circuit is a power-sharing setup — up to six current-generation Wall Connectors can share one circuit's power, splitting it between whichever cars are actually plugged in and drawing at a given moment.
