Start with the arithmetic, because it usually decides it: two units sharing a single 48-amp circuit deliver roughly 100 kilowatt-hours overnight, which is on the order of 300 miles of range split between the two cars. Very few two-car households drive 300 miles in a day. The expensive answer, two independent circuits, is the right one for high-mileage households and almost nobody else.

The arithmetic that usually settles it
A 48-amp charger on a 60-amp circuit draws 11.5 kilowatts at 240 volts. Over a ten-hour overnight window that is about 115 kilowatt-hours of grid energy and roughly 104 kilowatt-hours into batteries after AC conversion losses. At around three miles per kilowatt-hour, which is a reasonable figure for a mainstream electric sedan and a conservative one for anything more efficient, that is close to 310 miles of range.Split between two cars, that is 155 miles each, every night, from a single circuit. The relevant question is not whether that sounds like enough. It is what your two odometers say you actually drove last month, divided by thirty. Your own mileage is a better source than any national average, and most people are surprised by how low the number is.The table below is arithmetic with the assumptions stated. Substitute your own car's efficiency if you know it — a full-size electric pickup will be nearer two miles per kilowatt-hour and an efficient compact nearer four.
Option one: alternate nights and spend nothing
One charger, two cars, and you move the connector. It costs nothing beyond the install you were doing anyway, and for a household where the second car does short local trips it is genuinely sufficient.The reason to reject it is not usually range. It is friction. Somebody has to remember, in the dark, in February, and the night nobody remembers is the night one car leaves at forty percent. If both drivers are the sort of people who plug in without being asked, this option is fine. If they are not, buy the second unit.One practical note: a 25-foot cable will sometimes reach both bays, which turns this into a genuinely low-effort arrangement. Check the reach with a rope before you assume it.
Option two: a power-sharing pair on one circuit
Two chargers, one circuit, and the pair negotiates. When only one car is plugged in it gets the full current. When both are plugged in they split it, usually evenly, sometimes with priority rules you can set. Both cars are plugged in every night and nobody has to remember anything.This is not a workaround. The National Electrical Code recognises energy management systems explicitly in Article 750, and Section 625.42 allows the charger circuit to be sized against the managed setting rather than the raw nameplate maximum. Which edition your jurisdiction has adopted decides the details, and an inspector who has not seen a shared pair before will want the manufacturer's listing documentation. Have it ready.The constraint is that the units have to be a matched, listed pair from the same manufacturer that supports sharing. You cannot make two unrelated chargers share a circuit by hoping. Check that the model you like supports it before you buy the first one, because that decision locks in the second one.Cost is the second unit, commonly $300 to $800 of hardware, plus a modest amount of labour to mount it and land it on the existing circuit. There is no second run, no second breaker and no service upgrade conversation.
Option three: two independent circuits
Two chargers, two breakers, two runs, full rate to each car simultaneously. This is the right answer in a narrow set of cases: a household genuinely driving 150-plus miles a day per car, a heavy electric truck that eats two miles per kilowatt-hour, a short dwell window because one car goes back out at 4am, or a panel with so much spare capacity that the extra circuit costs nothing to accommodate.Priced on a modelled national basis, the second circuit lands in the same $850 to $2,200 attached-garage bracket as the first. It is often toward the lower end when it is done during the same visit, because the crew, the permit and the wall opening are already paid for. It is often toward the higher end when it is done two years later, for exactly the same reasons in reverse.The hidden cost is the panel. Two 60-amp circuits is 120 amps of nameplate load added to a service, and that is where a straightforward job turns into a service-upgrade conversation.
What the panel says, and why it usually says option two
Adding a second full-rate circuit is a load calculation question, not a preference. What matters is spare capacity under a standard calculation, not the number stamped on the main breaker. A 200-amp service with a gas range and gas heat has room a 200-amp service running electric heat, an electric range and a heat pump water heater does not.This is exactly where power sharing wins twice. It adds a second charging position without adding a single amp of calculated load, because the pair is limited to what the one circuit can supply. What a hardware salesperson will tell you
That you need two 48-amp chargers on two 60-amp circuits, because two cars means twice the power. It sounds obviously right and it is usually wrong, because it confuses the rate of charging with the amount of charging.Cars do not need power. They need energy, delivered before morning. A household with a ten-hour parking window and two cars covering a combined 80 miles a day is asking for about 27 kilowatt-hours a night. A single shared circuit delivers roughly four times that.The exception is real but narrow: if either car regularly needs a large charge in a short window, buy the second circuit. If they sit in the driveway from six in the evening until seven in the morning, you are paying for headroom that will never be used.
Wire once, whichever option you pick
Even if you install one charger today, ask the electrician to oversize the conduit or leave a pull string while the wall is open. Adding a second circuit later through existing conduit is a fraction of the price of adding it through finished drywall.Mounting position deserves the same foresight. Between the two bays rather than at the end of one costs nothing now and keeps both options open.
There is no federal money on either car
The Section 30C credit terminated for property placed in service after June 30, 2026, under 26 U.S.C. §30C(i) as amended by section 70504 of Public Law 119-21. It does not apply to the first charger, the second charger, or a shared pair. Anyone quoting you a thirty percent federal credit on a two-charger package is working from stale material.State and utility programs are what remain, and some of them have per-household caps that a second unit will not clear. Check by name and by date before you count on it.
Can two EVs use the same charger at the same time?
Not from one connector. One cable charges one car. What you can do is install a matched pair of units that share a single circuit and negotiate the available current, so both cars stay plugged in and split the power. That is a different thing from a splitter, which does not exist for Level 2 charging.
Is power sharing slower?
Per car, yes, while both are drawing. In practice it rarely matters, because a shared 48-amp circuit still delivers about 104 kilowatt-hours over ten hours, which is more than most two-car households use in a day. It is also usually faster than the alternative, which is one car not being plugged in at all.
Do I need a bigger panel for two EV chargers?
For two independent full-rate circuits, quite possibly. For a power-sharing pair, usually not, because the pair adds one circuit's worth of calculated load rather than two. That is the single strongest argument for sharing in an older house.
Can I mix two different brands of charger on one circuit?
No. Load sharing is negotiated between units of a matched, listed set from the same manufacturer. Two unrelated chargers on one circuit have no way to coordinate and would both draw full current. Pick the brand before you buy the first unit.
What does the second charger cost to add later?

Tell the estimate your panel amperage and how far the cars park from it, and it will show what a second circuit adds — and whether your panel has room for it.
