Can you install an EV charger outside without a garage?
Yes, and it is routine work. What changes outdoors is scope, not permission: the unit has to be listed for outdoor use, the enclosure rating has to match the exposure, and anything trenched out to a driveway pedestal has to meet the minimum burial cover in the code edition your jurisdiction has adopted. A charger on an exterior wall near the panel prices like a garage install. A pedestal at the end of a trench does not.

The listing decides it, not the weather
Electrical equipment has to be installed the way its listing says, and that settles the outdoor question in one line. NEC 110.3(B) requires listed equipment to be installed and used in accordance with the instructions included in the listing. If the nameplate and manual say the unit is suitable for outdoor use, it goes outside. If they do not, no amount of sealant makes it legal.Most Level 2 units sold in the United States are rated for outdoor installation, because most of them end up in an unconditioned garage or on an exterior wall anyway. Read the nameplate before you buy rather than after the electrician arrives. The enclosure rating is printed on it.
Wall mount or pedestal, and what each one costs
Mount it on a wall if there is a wall. A pedestal is the expensive answer to a question a wall usually already answers, and the pedestal itself is the smallest part of its cost. What you are paying for is a footing set below the local frost line, a conduit stub-up into it, and a trench between it and the house.The three walls people forget are the outside of the garage, the side of the house nearest the driveway, and a carport post. Any of them beats a pedestal if the car parks within reach. A charger on the far side of an exterior wall from the panel is close to the cheapest install there is, because the run is measured in feet rather than in tens of feet.The number that moves an outdoor job is the distance from the panel to the mounting point, and whether that distance goes through dirt.
How deep the trench has to be
Minimum burial cover is set by NEC Table 300.5 and it depends on the wiring method, not on how careful you feel. Conduit buys you a shallower trench than direct-buried cable, and metal conduit buys you a much shallower one. That trade is worth running before anyone starts digging, because in rocky ground the difference between 18 inches and 24 inches is real money.Two local rules routinely override the table. Frost depth sets its own minimum in cold climates, and it can be deeper than anything in the code. And the moment the trench crosses a driveway the numbers change. Ask which edition of the code your jurisdiction has adopted before you assume any of this — adoption is not uniform, and plenty of jurisdictions are several cycles behind.
Sun, salt and lightning change the specification
Ultraviolet exposure works on the enclosure and on the cable jacket, in that order of visibility and reverse order of importance. Given a choice between two walls, take the one that is not in direct sun all afternoon. It costs nothing and the cable lasts longer.Salt air is the exposure that decides a rating rather than a preference. Within a few miles of open water, corrosion on terminations and on the connector face is the failure mode you will actually meet, and a Type 4X enclosure with stainless hardware stops being an upsell. The same goes for equipment mounted near a pool deck.In high-lightning regions, surge protection on the charger circuit is a normal line item rather than a padded one. A charger is a piece of grid-connected electronics on the outside of a building, which is the definition of an exposed load.
Cold weather: the cable stiffens, and the holster stops being cosmetic
This is the part outdoor charger pages leave out. Below freezing the cable jacket goes stiff. A cable that coiled easily in September fights you in January and will not lie where you put it, and that single fact should drive two decisions at install time.First, holster height. Mount the connector holster around chest height, high enough that the connector never rests in slush and never sits in the puddle at the base of the wall. A connector that spends the night on wet ground eventually spends a morning frozen to it. Some jurisdictions have their own amendment on connector storage height, so your inspector is the final word, but nobody has ever regretted mounting it higher.Second, cable path. Leave the cable a natural hanging loop rather than a tight coil it has to be forced onto in the cold. A stiff cable dragged into a tight hook every night loads the strain relief at the connector, which is where cables fail. If the manufacturer sells a cable management arm for the unit, an outdoor install is where it earns its price.Charging itself is fine in the cold. The car will draw less power at first while it warms the battery, and it will take longer to fill. That is the vehicle's behaviour, not the charger's, and there is nothing to specify around it.
Twenty-five feet is a hard ceiling
NEC 625.17 limits the output cable on EV supply equipment to 25 feet unless the unit includes a listed cable management system. That number, not the length of the branch circuit, is what decides whether the connector reaches the charge port. You can run a hundred feet of conduit to the mounting point; you cannot run thirty feet of charging cable from it.Outdoors this bites harder than in a garage, because the parking position is looser. Walk it before the mount location is fixed. Which side is the charge port on, how do you actually pull in, and does the cable have to cross behind the car.
What an inspector looks at on an outdoor install
The permit is the same permit — a dedicated 240-volt circuit is permitted electrical work in most United States jurisdictions whether it terminates inside or outside. The items that get flagged outdoors are specific, and they are all about water and support.Fittings and boxes have to be listed for wet locations, conduit has to be properly supported rather than draped, penetrations into the building have to be sealed, and any receptacle installed for EV charging needs ground-fault protection under NEC 625.54. Weather-resistant receptacles in outdoor locations also need an in-use cover. None of this is exotic. All of it is what gets a job rejected.
What is left of the money
Nothing federal. The Section 30C credit terminated for property placed in service after June 30, 2026, under 26 U.S.C. §30C(i) as amended by section 70504 of Public Law 119-21. It contributes zero to an outdoor install today, and it contributes zero to an indoor one. If a proposal you receive nets a thirty percent federal credit against the price, that money is not coming and the proposal needs correcting before you sign it.What survives is the state layer and the utility layer. Both are local, both change, and neither is guaranteed to exist where you live. That is worth checking by name and by date rather than by national average.
Do I need a special EV charger for outdoor use?
