Where to mount it, and how far the cable reaches

About 25 feet, and the constraint is the charging cable rather than the branch circuit. NEC 625.17 limits the output cable on EV supply equipment to 25 feet unless the unit includes a listed cable management system. The circuit can run a hundred feet from the panel to the mounting point; the cable cannot. Subtract mounting height and the slack you do not want pulled taut, and an 18-foot cable is realistically an 11 to 12-foot reach.

Twenty-five feet, and why circuit length is a red herring

NEC 625.17 caps the output cable at 25 feet unless the equipment includes a listed cable management system. Nothing you or your electrician does changes that number, because it is set by the equipment listing, not by the install.People conflate two different distances. The branch circuit runs from the panel to wherever the charger is mounted, and it can be long. Conduit and conductors are cheap per foot relative to everything else on the job, and a sixty-foot run around the inside of a garage is a normal line item. The charging cable runs from the mounted unit to the car, and it is fixed at whatever the manufacturer supplies.So the question to answer first is not where the panel is. It is where the charge port ends up when the car is parked the way you actually park it.

Usable reach is shorter than the cable on the box

A charger is mounted at roughly chest height, so the first four feet of cable are spent getting to the ground. Another two or three go into the slack you leave so the cable is not stretched tight to the port, because a taut cable pulls on the connector every time the car settles or someone walks past it.That is where the rough arithmetic below comes from. It is geometry, not a measurement, so treat it as a planning number and verify it with a tape measure and a piece of rope.

The walk-the-cable exercise

Do this before the electrician quotes, not after. Take twenty feet of rope or an extension cord, tape one end where you are thinking of mounting the unit, and park the car the way you park it on a Tuesday night in the rain. Not the way you park it for a photograph.Then check five things. Does the rope reach the charge port with slack left over. Does it reach if the car is a foot further forward than usual. Does it cross behind the car where a reversing driver will run over it. Does it block the walking path between the car and the door into the house. And does the garage door, or the car door, swing into the mounted unit.Ten minutes of rope answers a question that costs a second install to answer later. Moving a charger fifteen feet is not an adjustment. It is a new circuit run, new terminations, a patched wall and, in most jurisdictions, another permit.

Which corner your charge port is on

Go look. Charge ports sit in four common places: the left rear quarter panel, the right rear quarter panel, a front fender, or the nose. There is no convention across manufacturers and there is not much within them, so the only reliable source is the car in your driveway.The rear-quarter cases are the easy ones, because you can choose to nose in or back in and change which side the port lands on. Front-fender and nose ports are less forgiving, and a nose port on a car that has to be backed into a tight garage is the case most likely to strand you at 12 feet of cable.If you have not taken delivery yet, the port location is in the owner's manual and it is worth looking up before the mounting position is fixed.

Park it the way you park it

The mounting decision is really a parking-habits decision. Someone who reverses into the garage every night has a completely different geometry from someone who noses in, and the person who does both depending on whether there are groceries needs the reach to cover both.Garage depth matters more than people expect. A full-size crew-cab pickup is roughly twenty feet long and a typical residential bay is not much deeper than that, so the front bumper ends up against the wall and the rear port ends up at the door. The rough dimensions below are worth checking against a tape measure in your own garage rather than assumed.

Mounting height, and what it is actually for

Roughly chest height is the working answer, and it is chosen for three reasons that have nothing to do with looks. The connector never rests on the floor where it collects grit and water. The cable hangs in a natural loop instead of pooling. And the display, if the unit has one, is where you can read it without crouching.There is no single national mounting height for the equipment itself, and some jurisdictions carry their own amendment on where the connector may be stored. Your inspector is the authority on that. What is not negotiable is NEC 110.26 working clearance at the panel: 30 inches of width, 36 inches of depth and a clear height, kept clear. A charger mounted directly in front of the panel is a rejection, and it is a common one.

The second car, and the car you have not bought yet

Most households that go electric once go electric twice. Mounting between the two bays rather than at the end of one costs nothing today and saves a decision later, particularly if you choose a unit with a longer cable.There is a cheaper version of the same foresight. Ask the electrician to run conduit large enough for a second circuit, or to leave a pull string, while the wall is open and the crew is on site. The marginal cost of oversizing conduit during the first job is small. The cost of opening the same wall again is the whole job.

What it costs to get it wrong

Relocating a charger is priced as a fresh install: new run, new terminations, drywall repair and usually a new permit. On a modelled national basis that is the same $850 to $2,200 bracket as the original attached-garage job, spent a second time, and it is entirely avoidable with a rope and ten minutes.There is no federal credit softening that. Section 30C terminated for property placed in service after June 30, 2026, so a redo costs full price.

How long can an EV charger cable be?

Up to 25 feet under NEC 625.17, unless the unit includes a listed cable management system that is part of the equipment. Manufacturers commonly ship 16, 18, 20 or 25-foot cables, and the longer ones cost more and are heavier to handle in cold weather.

Does the charger have to be near the electrical panel?

No. The branch circuit can run a long way — sixty to a hundred feet is normal — and the cost is conduit, conductors and labour per foot. What cannot be extended is the charging cable itself, so mount for the car and pay for the run.

Can I use an extension cord to reach the car?

No. EV supply equipment is not designed to be extended with a cord, manufacturers prohibit it, and the connection is a continuous high-current load for hours at a time. If the cable will not reach, the answer is a longer-cable unit or a different mounting position.

How high should an EV charger be mounted?

Around chest height is the practical answer: the connector stays off the floor, the cable hangs naturally, and the display is readable. Some jurisdictions amend connector storage height, so ask your inspector. Keep it clear of the NEC 110.26 working space in front of the panel, which is 30 inches wide by 36 inches deep.

Can one charger serve two parking spots?

Sometimes, if a 25-foot cable reaches both and you are willing to move the connector between cars. If both cars need to be plugged in overnight, a power-sharing pair on one circuit is the cleaner answer than one unit stretched across two bays.
