Adding an EV charger during a panel upgrade

Yes, materially cheaper — if the panel upgrade was happening anyway. On a day when the meter is pulled, the wall is open and the permit and inspection are already bought, the charger circuit is the small item on the invoice. The site's model puts a service upgrade with a charger at $2,500 to $6,000 and the upgrade on its own at $1,500 to $3,000 for the electrical work. What that does not mean is the reverse: an upgrade you did not need does not become worthwhile because a car showed up.

Why the charger circuit is cheap on panel day

Almost everything expensive about an electrical day is fixed cost. Mobilisation, the permit, the inspection slot, the utility disconnect and reconnect, the meter can, the grounding electrode system, the wall opened around the panel — none of that gets cheaper or more expensive because of one more breaker.The charger circuit on top of that day is a two-pole breaker, a run of conductors and a device on the wall, installed by people who are already there with the panel out and the cover off. Landing a new circuit in an open panel is a fundamentally different job from landing one in a live, full, finished panel in a crawlspace.So the honest framing is not that the charger is discounted. It is that you are paying the fixed cost once instead of twice.

Spare spaces are the thing people forget

A 200-amp panel with forty spaces and a 200-amp panel with thirty spaces cost about the same and are not the same purchase. Ten years of electrification is roughly five two-pole circuits, and that is before the arc-fault and ground-fault requirements that turn one old shared circuit into two.There is a second reason to think in spaces. Under NEC 110.3(B) the panel's own listing label governs what may be installed in it, including whether tandem breakers are permitted and where. You cannot decide later to double up in a panel whose label forbids it. Buy the spaces on the day the panel is a line item.The counter-argument is real and worth hearing: a physically larger panel needs somewhere to live, and in a tight utility room or a hallway with clearance rules, bigger is not always installable. Ask what fits before you ask what you want.

The counter-case: do not let the car become the excuse

Here is the sentence this page exists to say. Most houses do not need a service upgrade to charge a car, and the cheapest upgrade is the one a load calculation shows you never needed.NEC 220.83 is an optional calculation for adding load to an existing dwelling, and NEC 220.87 lets an electrician use twelve months of your utility's own recorded maximum demand instead of appliance nameplates. The second method regularly passes houses the first one fails on paper, because it counts what your house actually did rather than what every appliance in it could theoretically do at once.There is also a real middle path. An energy management system under NEC 750, recognised in NEC 625.42(A) as the way to set the charger's contribution to the service load, sheds the charger when the house draws hard. For a car parked overnight, that costs you nothing you will notice and it costs a fraction of a service upgrade.So: get the calculation before you get the upgrade. If the calculation says you need one, the advice on this page is excellent. If it says you do not, this page is a trap.

When the upgrade genuinely is the right purchase

What the utility controls, and what that does to your calendar

A service upgrade is not entirely your electrician's job. Pulling the meter, and often replacing the service drop or the lateral, is the utility's work, scheduled on the utility's calendar. That is usually the longest item on the project, and it is the one your contractor cannot compress.Ask two questions before you sign: who applies to the utility, and what is the current turnaround in your area. A charger install that would have taken two weeks can take two months when a service upgrade is attached to it, and the reason is never the electrician.

What is not offsetting any of this

The federal charger credit. Section 30C is terminated for property placed in service after June 30, 2026, under Public Law 119-21, so a charger energised today contributes $0 of federal credit against a panel day. Panel upgrades were never covered by it in their own right anyway.What can still offset it is your state and your utility. Some utility programs cover panel and wiring work as well as the charger, which is exactly the kind of thing worth finding before you schedule, since several require approval before work begins.

How much does the charger add if the panel is being replaced anyway?

Less than it would as a standalone visit, but we are not going to publish a subtraction of two independently sourced ranges as if someone measured it. Ask your electrician to quote the panel day twice — with and without the charger circuit — and the difference is the real answer for your house. Any bidder doing a panel replacement can produce those two numbers in a minute.

Should I run the charger circuit now if I have not bought the charger?

Yes, if you know where the car will park. A capped, labelled, inspected 240-volt circuit at the right wall is the expensive part done. Tell the electrician the maximum charger current you might ever want so the conductor is sized for it, because the wire is what you cannot change cheaply later.

Do I need 200 amps for an EV charger?

No. What matters is spare capacity under a load calculation, not the number on the main breaker. Plenty of 100-amp services take a charger as they stand, especially with the charger current set down or with a load-management device. Upgrading to 200 amps is a good idea for other reasons; do not let it be sold to you as a charger requirement.

Can I get a bigger panel without upgrading the service?

Often yes, and it is a real and much cheaper option people are not offered. Replacing a full 100-amp panel with a 100-amp-rated panel that has more spaces solves a spaces problem without touching the utility's side of the work. It solves nothing if the problem is capacity, which is what the load calculation tells you.

How long does a panel upgrade take?

The electrical work is normally a day. The calendar is set by the utility disconnect and reconnect and by the inspection slot, which together commonly run weeks and can run longer. Ask for the utility turnaround in your area before you plan around a date.
