Why EV charger quotes vary so much for the same charger
Because two quotes for the same charger are almost never quoting the same amount of work. Six things move a residential EV charger price and only one of them is the charger: spare capacity in your electrical panel, the route the circuit has to take, whether any of it goes underground, whether finished walls get opened, the local permit fee, and whether the electrician ran a load calculation or guessed at one. The six variables, in the order they move money
Ranked by how much they typically swing a residential number, biggest first. Everything else on your quote is rounding.Notice that four of the six are decided by your house, not by your electrician. That is why a national average is nearly useless to you and why two honest bidders can be two thousand dollars apart without either of them padding anything.
Spare capacity is the biggest single swing
A service upgrade adds $1,500 to $3,000 for the electrical work alone, and that is before the utility's side of it — the service drop, the meter can, and in older housing a grounding electrode system that has to be brought up to the current code. The panel itself is a separate purchase, $500 to $5,000 depending on what goes in.So the question of whether your house has room is worth more than every other question on the quote combined. And there is a correct way to answer it: arithmetic. NEC 220.83 is an optional calculation for adding a load to an existing dwelling, and NEC 220.87 lets the electrician use twelve months of your utility's own recorded maximum demand instead. Both are code-recognised methods. Neither is a look at the panel from six feet away.If one quote has a service upgrade in it and another does not, do not assume the cheaper one missed something. Ask both which method they used and ask for the sheet.
Route, not distance
Conduit and copper cost very little per foot next to the labour of getting them there. Sixty feet across an open basement ceiling is an hour with a hammer drill and a ladder. Twenty feet through a finished wall, an insulated exterior cavity and a fire-separated garage ceiling can be most of a day, and it ends with drywall that somebody has to close.This is the variable homeowners most often can change, because where the charger goes is your decision. A charger on the wall the panel is on is the cheapest install available. Moving it fifteen feet so the cable reaches the driveway can cost more than the charger did. Ask for both numbers before you pick a spot — most electricians will give you them without complaint, because it makes their day easier too.Distance does eventually matter on its own terms: past roughly 150 feet at 48 amps, voltage drop starts pushing the conductor a size up. The trench is not the digging, it is the restoration
A detached garage or a pad across the yard puts the job in the $2,000 to $6,000 band. The excavation itself is rarely the expensive part. The permit fee is a local fact, and it is not the electrician's fault
Fifty dollars in one county and eight hundred in the next one, for identical work. It is the widest line item on a simple job and the one nobody controls. Some jurisdictions charge on declared valuation, so a job that comes in just over a fee threshold pays for a plan review it would have skipped a hundred dollars lower.Two things worth checking. Confirm in writing that the electrician pulls the permit — a permit pulled in the homeowner's name moves responsibility for code compliance onto the homeowner, and it is occasionally offered as a discount. And ask whether the fee is quoted or estimated, because a permit quoted at $150 in a jurisdiction that charges $600 is a change order waiting to happen.
How to compare two quotes that are $2,000 apart
Send both bidders the same six questions. Whichever one answers them properly is usually the one to hire, independent of price.
One line that should not appear on any quote you receive today
A federal tax credit. Section 30C terminated for property placed in service after June 30, 2026, so a residential charger energised today gets $0 federal credit. Public Law 119-21 moved the sunset forward from 2032, and most of the internet has not caught up — including some quoting software.If a proposal nets a thirty percent federal credit against your price, that money is not coming and the real number you are being shown is higher than you think. What is left is your state and your utility, and those are worth checking, because they are the entire incentive story now.
Why did one electrician include a panel upgrade and another did not?
Usually because one of them ran a load calculation and the other estimated from the panel label. NEC 220.83 and NEC 220.87 are both code-recognised methods for an existing dwelling, and 220.87 — which uses twelve months of your utility's recorded maximum demand — passes houses that 220.83 fails on paper. Ask each bidder which method they used and ask for the one-page sheet.
Is the electrician marking up the charger?
Probably, and that is normal — hardware runs $300 to $800 and a contractor who supplies it also warrants it. Ask for it as a separate line so you can compare. Before you buy your own, read the manufacturer's warranty terms, because some require installation by a certified installer.
Does choosing a lower charger current actually save money?
Yes, on the circuit rather than on the charger. A 32-amp charger needs a 40-amp circuit and 8 AWG copper; a 48-amp charger needs a 60-amp circuit and 6 AWG. On a long run that is a real difference in wire and conduit, and on a tight service it can be the difference between needing a service upgrade and not. Overnight it costs you almost nothing in range.
Should I get three quotes?
Two or three, but make them quote the same scope or you are comparing nothing. Fix the charger location, the charger model and the amperage before you ask, and tell each bidder the same thing about who closes the walls.
Why is the permit so expensive where I live?
Because permit fees are set locally and the spread between neighbouring jurisdictions is wider than most people expect, roughly $50 to $800 for a single residential circuit. Some jurisdictions price on declared valuation, so the fee moves with the size of the job. It is worth knowing the number before you sign, but it is not negotiable and it is not the electrician's margin.
